My father and some of my buddies from WW 2 used that thing in combat. Some guys told me the Russians tried to enter their lines outside Kharkov just to try and steal one in 1943. The thing was called 'The Hitler Saw' with good reason.

@Bataaf1488 GPMG, not LMG. An LMG is a machine gun that fires intermediate caliber rounds, like the 5.56x45mm. The MG 42 fires the 7.92mm Mauser round, which is a full power round.

@Centennial107 Not exactly, the term LMG (light machine gun) was in use long before the invention of the intermediate round like the 7.62x39. The term was adopted for ANY machine gun (all at that time were rifle caliber) which could be carried and fired by one or two men, usually the assistant gunner that carried ammo or mags. The term GPMG was in use as a machine gun which had a general purpose of bipod and tripod operation in direct or indirect fire modes.

@Centennial107 bollox lol we used the lmg in the army an it was 7.62 it used to be called the bren gun and was in .303 cal before they upgraded the chamber to bring it into line with the rest of nato's cal of ammo

@moonpie129 You really didn't have that long as most German MG teams had security crews guarding while firing. They would get you when you charged the MG during the barrel change.

In reality the only realistic way to deal with it was to achieve fire superiority and flank it. Easier said then done obviously but when everyone has M1 Garands, rifle grenades and BARs it can be done but it will cost you. Someone is going to get raked. The only solutioin the Russais could come up with was to run it over with a T-34 Tank. Hey if it works it works!

@FlattusMaximusD incorrect the German rifle caliber in WWII was 7.92mm not 7.62mm. The MG42 use 7.92mm rounds.
